What Can You Do to Help Animals in Need?

Did you know that an estimated 6 million cats and dogs will pass through an animal adoption center across the United States annually? Unfortunately, more than half of those may never find a new home. Let’s talk about some of the ways you can support a local animal adoption center and help animals in need.

Adopt a Pet

One of the best ways you can support an animal adoption center is by adopting one of their pets. Not only does this mean that you will be saving that individual animal, but your actions will have a more widespread effect on the animal adoption center. Adopting one of their residents frees up accommodations to help another animal they previously did not have space for. In addition, if they take an adoption fee, this gives much-needed funds to put back into caring for needy animals. Finally, by choosing to adopt, you are setting an example to friends and family who may be encouraged to visit the animal adoption center to rescue a pet themselves! Adopting a pet saves more than one animal in need.

While adopting an animal is a great way to support your local animal adoption center, we understand that not everyone has the ability to do so. Pets can be a huge commitment in terms of both time and money, and you may need more than both! You may also be restricted from having pets in your rented accommodation, or maybe someone in the family is allergic. The good news is that there are many other ways that you can support animals in need. Let’s take a look at some great ways that you can help animals in need.

Volunteer Your Time

If you are not in a position where you can adopt an animal, consider supporting your local animal adoption center by volunteering a few hours of your time. There are many transferable skills that an animal rescue organization can make use of. If you have excellent DIY skills, you could help to maintain the animal adoption center building and facilities. Social media Whizz Kids could volunteer to help market the organization and promote adoption events. You can even volunteer for simple tasks like walking the dogs or feeding the animals. Whatever you have to offer as a volunteer, your local animal adoption center will surely be grateful for your time.

Collect Donations

Rescue organizations always need supplies to help with the care of the animals they have in residence. Consider supporting them by hosting a donation drive to collect things like pet food, toys, and blankets. You may even want to ask if the local animal adoption center has an Amazon wishlist set up, as this is a convenient way for people to donate and allows the organization to list the supplies that they are most in need of.

Sponsor an Adoption

If you cannot adopt your own pet, why not consider sponsoring an adoption instead? You can donate the money to cover the adoption fee, which can incentivize someone to adopt that animal. It is common for an animal adoption center to remove adoption fees for their longest residents to try and encourage an adoption. If you can sponsor such an adoption, it means they won’t have to lose out on the fees they would usually have collected.

Take Steps to Reduce The Need For Rescues

If you are already a pet owner, you can make some changes that will indirectly support your local animal adoption center by helping to curb overpopulation. Firstly, if you have not spayed or neutered your pet, it is a responsible step to take as this helps to reduce overpopulation. There are currently enough animals in shelters across the country that there is little need for more cats and dogs to be intentionally, or worse accidentally, bred! Another step you can take is making sure that your pet can be easily reunited with you if it is ever lost. Get your pet microchipped and ensure they have a properly fitted collar with contact information on the tag. This way, if your pet happens to stray a little too far from home and find itself in an animal rescue, they can call you immediately and not take up one of their in-demand spaces!
