Most Common Dog Breeds You’ll Find at an Animal Adoption Center

The most common dog breeds you will find at an animal adoption center can vary by region and local population dynamics. However, certain breeds and their mixes tend to be more prevalent in rescue centers due to factors such as overbreeding, popularity, and breed-specific legislation. Common breeds found in shelters include:

Labrador Retriever

The Labrador Retriever may be one of the most beloved dog breeds in the United States, but it is also one of the breeds that most often turns up at an animal adoption center looking for a new home. This is a case of popularity backfiring! Labradors are known to be loyal and loving dogs, so they are a popular choice for family pets. However, this popularity has led to overbreeding by some unscrupulous breeders, resulting in many of these wonderful dogs needing help finding a home. Consider adopting a Labrador if you are looking for an energetic family pet that loves to swim!

Pit Bulls

If you visit any animal adoption center across the United States, you are sure to find at least one or two Pit Bulls in residence, if not more. Unfortunately, Pit Bulls have gotten a bad reputation over the years due to misrepresentation in the media and breed-specific laws. Many families will shy away from Pit Bulls because they have the misconception that they are dangerous and vicious animals. This belief has gained popularity because the breed is often abused and neglected by people using them for dog fighting. However, the truth is that when a Pit Bull is treated well they are one of the most loving dog breeds around and can make incredibly loyal pets. Unfortunately, due to the problems mentioned above, some rescue Pit Bulls may distrust humans and have existing behavioral issues. Training can help, but it may be wise not to adopt a dog like this if you have small children. Talk to the animal adoption center and find out the dog's personality before dismissing a Pit Bull.

Jack Russell Terriers

If we had to describe a Jack Russell in just two words, we would choose small and energetic! These little pocket rockets can be challenging for inexperienced owners, especially without the correct training. That's why they are often found in an animal adoption center. Although small, Jack Russell Terriers need lots of rigorous exercise every day to keep boredom at bay! This is traditionally a hunting breed, so they need lots of stimulation. Without it, they may be destructive and can bark incessantly. However, if you are willing to put in the effort, a Jack Russell can be a great addition to an active family.

German Shepherds

German Shepherds are a popular choice for guard dogs because of their reputation for strength and agility. However, these highly energetic dogs can develop destructive and aggressive behaviors without the appropriate training. This has resulted in many of them being rehomed, so you will see them fairly often in an animal adoption center. Unfortunately, their original owners were unprepared for the time and energy needed to raise this particular breed. However, if you are an experienced dog owner with the time to ensure a German Shepherd gets plenty of enrichment, they can be incredibly loyal companions.

Dachshunds

Many people are drawn to Dachshunds because they are irresistibly sweet little dogs. So, why will they often be surrendered to an animal adoption center? The truth is, these dogs are small, but they pack a whole lot of personality into their tiny bodies! Dachshunds are renowned for being quirky and stubborn, with a passion for digging! This is a built-in instinct from when they were bred as badger and mole hunters! This instinct makes them one of the most surrendered dog breeds, as they can often cause damage to lawns and household items with their digging if they are not adequately trained and occupied.

Chihuahuas

Chihuahuas became a popular choice among fashion-conscious young women in the 1990s and early 2000s thanks to many celebrities and fashionistas being seen carrying them around. Movies and the media portrayed them as cute accessories. However, the truth of Chihuahua ownership is that they need proper training and lots of care and attention. Chihuahuas are currently the second most euthanized dog breed in the country, particularly in California, thanks to the 'Hollywood' effect, which gives an unrealistic expectation of the breed. However, if you find a Chihuahua at an animal adoption center needing a new home, know that the stereotype of a yapping ankle-biter is far from the truth. With the appropriate care and training, a Chihuahua can make for a loyal, lively, and attentive companion.

It's important to note that mixed-breed dogs often make up a significant portion of the population at an animal adoption center. Many wonderful and unique dogs of all shapes, sizes, and breeds can be found in rescue centers, and they make great companions for those looking to adopt. If you're considering adding a dog to your family, adopting from a shelter is a great way to provide a loving home to a pet in need.
