Plush stuffed animals have been a treasured toy for children and adults alike for many years now. Not only are they a fun plaything, but many become trusted companions and treasured comfort items. Have you ever wondered where they first came from? It is widely accepted that Margarete and Richard Steiff are the mother and father of plush stuffed animals, but if you really dig deep into the history, there is evidence of some form of plush toy as far back as the most ancient civilizations. With that in mind, let's take a look at some of the key moments in the history of plush stuffed animals!
The original concept of a stuffed toy can actually be traced back to some of our most ancient civilizations. There is archeological evidence to suggest that children from ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome played with doll-like toys made from cloth and stuffed with other soft materials. These can be seen as one of the precursors to the plush stuffed animals we know and love.
During the Renaissance period in Europe, which covers around 1454-1600, the wealthiest families often had ornate, handcrafted fabric animals of their children. These were made using rich fabrics and were embellished with intricate details. These were likely more ornamental than a plaything.
The Industrial Revolution in the 18th and 19th centuries brought significant advances in textile manufacturing, which made it easier to mass-manufacture items, including plush stuffed animals. It was during this era that Margarete Steiff first began to sew her plush stuffed animals in 1879, starting with a plush elephant. She went on to make mice and rabbits, giving them as gifts to her friends and relatives. However, her nephew Richard Steiff saw the potential in his aunt's creations and helped to design a more extensive range of animals for his aunt to sew. In 1880, he founded the Steiff Company with Margarete, and the company became one of the most famous manufacturers of plush stuffed animals.
One of the most iconic plush stuffed animals, the teddy bear, has a fascinating origin. In 1902, President Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt went on a hunting trip in Mississippi. When he didn't have any success, his hosts caught a bear and tied it to a tree for him to shoot. Roosevelt, however, refused to shoot the defenseless animal. This event was captured in a political cartoon by Clifford Berryman, and it inspired a Brooklyn candy shop owner, Morris Michtom, to create a stuffed bear and name it "Teddy's Bear." At the same time, German toymaker Richard Steiff independently developed a similar bear design. These bears, both called "teddy bears," became hugely popular.
In the 20th century, further advances in materials and manufacturing techniques allowed for a wider variety of stuffed animals to be created. Different types of fabric, stuffing materials, and design innovations led to a wide range of animals and characters being turned into plush toys. Plush stuffed animals started to become closely associated with popular culture. They were often created to resemble characters from books, movies, and television shows. This trend continues today, with plush stuffed animals representing a vast array of characters from various media franchises.
Plush stuffed animals have also become popular collectible items. Collectors will aim to collect every variation of a specific toy. Some of the most mainstream collectibles that come to mind are the frenzy of beanie babies in the 1990s, vintage Steiff bears, and, more recently, Squishmallows. Limited-edition or vintage plush toys can be highly sought after by collectors and sell for hundreds or even thousands of dollars.
Today, the production and sale of plush stuffed animals is a global industry, with manufacturers in many countries around the world. In the United States alone, over 100 million plush stuffed animals are sold every year!
